HAPPY PEOPLE COLLECTION BY ARTIST DENISE LEE ROBERTSON
Speaking Rock Jewelry with Denise… her energy and love for her work can be felt a state away over the phone. Based in a small desert town in New Mexico, this artist and jewelry maker has a history of taking all that is old and magical in the benign details of life and making it into something tangibly beautiful.
Hitting the road with her husband in the 90’s in a 1974 Buffalo Bus, they traveled to many different archaeological sites over the course of ten years in the western parts of the U.S. In these sacred places, Denise was fascinated by the history they found, photographing petroglyph rocks and Anasazi sherds (pottery remnants). Denise exclaims that “you would even find their fingerprints where they would imprint their thumb at the bottom of the pot,” leaving quite an impression on her.
As they continued to travel, Denise was continually impressed by all of the raw materials around her. “I see life in high detail. Art is anywhere. You can see fragments of art everywhere.” From automobile glass on the side of a dusty highway in Wyoming to the materials washing down the street of a rain gutter in Moab, she began to use the fabric of goods the universe provided around her as she continued to hone her art.
Like a modern day alchemist, Denise “loves turning nothing into something…100% harvested from where I’m standing.” Upcycling, recycling, finding precious materials like a miner looking for gold she was further inspired by her young daughter’s stick figure drawing phase, starting her jewelry line The Happy People Collection.
Handcrafted from the innards of old watch parts, old keys and other precious materials, each one holds a special message inspired by the stories she would often hear from people on the road, giving a memorial for the loss of a dog or a son, celebrating the love of a mother or a child.
Concluding our interview, the love Denise has for her work leaves me humbled, stating that “when you pull someone’s heartstrings with jewelry, the result is incredible.”
Holding one of her pieces that has been lovingly handcrafted, pierced, stamped, textured, and soldered with these heartfelt messages–every one as unique and precious as a thumbprint left on ancient pottery, I cannot help but agree.
Denise’s line The Happy People Collection can be found at The Village Frame Shop at 51 Bell Rock Plaza, Sedona, AZ 928-274-5158 or online at www.sedonaframegallery.com
